Read previewResearchers observed a single killer whale slaying a great white shark and eating its liver, providing new insights about the hunting practice that could foreshadow potential problems for the fishing industry. AdvertisementStarboard has been observed killing white sharks in the past however, he usually hunts with a male companion named Port. The orcas have been hunting white sharks and eating their livers off the coast of South Africa for years. Rare drone footage captured for Discovery Channel's Shark Week in 2022 showed killer whales preying on a white shark. But scientists still don't know exactly where those white sharks are going.

Scientists witnessed one of the hunters, a male orca known as Starboard, single-handedly kill a 2.5-meter (8.2-foot) juvenile white shark within a two-minute time frame last year. “Over two decades of annual visits to South Africa, I’ve observed the profound impact these killer whales have on the local white shark population. A second great white shark carcass washes ashore in June near Hartenbos, South Africa. It wasn’t until 2022 that aerial footage first captured the orcas killing a great white shark, Towner said. The kill by a lone orca might have been made possible by the prey’s smaller size as a juvenile great white, according to the study.

MUNICH — The mesmerizing scene along the banks of Munich’s lime-green Isar River on a recent summer afternoon made me, an out-of-towner, quiver with envy. Clusters of students, off-duty office workers, families and nude sunbathers were sprawled out on blankets with bottled beer and light meals. The restoration was meant to benefit flood-prone neighborhoods, as well as the river’s flora and fauna. But today the river is also an easily accessible public space that offers essential relief from the heat. “I don’t have a balcony, I don’t have a garden, but I have the Isar,” said an apartment-dwelling friend who swims there regularly.

US debt held by the public will climb to a record high of 107% of the gross domestic product in 2029, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected on Wednesday. The projection comes despite the bipartisan debt ceiling deal hailed by its backers as a major deficit reducer. In 2029, debt held by the public will total about $36 trillion, or $104,300 per person, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-profit public policy organization. Debt held by the public is expected to hit 181% of GDP in 2053, far exceeding any previous record. To put it another way: US debt in 2053 could equal about $384,700 per person, compared to $75,700 today, according to Towner.

The Census Bureau released county-level population estimates for July 1, 2022, along with net migration and natural change estimates for counties, on Thursday. Additionally, among these 10 large counties with the highest percent increases were five Texas counties. Dawson County and Lumpkin County in Georgia were the two Georgia counties that were among the 10 fastest-growing large counties. The following are the large counties that saw the largest percent declines during this time frame. However, Lassen County in California had the greatest percent decline among these large counties, falling by 6.0%.
A pair of orca whales in South Africa killed 17 sharks in just "one sitting," said marine biologists. The male duo had previously terrorized great white sharks that used to hunt in the area. Days later, they found the remains of 11 of the 17 killed sevengill sharks in Pearly Beach. The carcasses of several great white sharks have since washed up on the shores of False Bay, all grossly injured and with their oil-rich livers ripped out. For the first time in May 2022, scientists were able to film Starboard killing a great white shark.
Stunning drone footage shows an orca carrying a great white shark in its mouth as blood pooled. A study published last month suggested orcas had driven great whites from South African waters. Suddenly, a third orca rises from the depths, carrying a 9-foot-long great white shark in its mouth. Great white sharks are considered apex predators, meaning they have no known predators; however, researchers have identified rare occurrences of them being preyed upon by orcas. The researchers noted carcasses of dead great whites had been washing ashore with their livers ripped out and, for some, without their hearts.
